You can see the debut trailer for Pac-Man 256 in the video above. Hipster Whale is working with Bandai Namco Studios Vancouver on the free-to-play game, which will be available for smartphones and tablets this summer. Pac-Man will face his old nemeses, Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde, as well as other strains of colorful ghosts. Like mobile hit Crossy Road, Pac-Man 256 is played from an isometric perspective. The glitched out wave of death is based on the 256th level of Pac-Man, which would corrupt the game's maze due to a programming bug, making it unplayable. Pac-Man 256 is an endless maze runner in which Pac-Man eats dots, avoids ghosts and attempts to outrun a relentless threat: a wave of pixelated gibberish that threatens to overtake the screen. Trivia Pac-Man was released because of Hipster Whale's new game, Pac-Man 256.

The eagle is replaced by the glitch which creeps up from the bottom of the runway, the same way in Pac-Man 256. The result? Pac-Man 256, a new mobile game that adds a clever twist to the dot-eating formula that's based on the original game's infamous level glitch. Eating a Power Pellet causes the ghosts to turn blue and can be eaten.

Bandai Namco has tapped Crossy Road creators Hipster Whale to put their spin on Pac-Man for his 35th anniversary.
